Environment Agency calls for heating oil vigilance
23/04/2009
It is important to remember to continue to check for leaks originating from heating oil tanks over the summer, the Environment Agency has warned.
The group identified heating oil tank dilapidations as a major cause of local environmental damage and one of the main contributors to water pollution.
It reminds heating oil customers that while their heating oil tanks may not be in use, it is still important to check them once a week for damages and leaks.
"Pollution prevention is better than trying to deal with an accident, which can result in enforcement action against the owner of the tank in addition to the costs of cleaning up the spilt oil," said environment management team leader Peter Stark.
Residents in Cornwall were also recently reminded of the need to keep their heating oil tanks in good condition and check them regularly as the number of leaks in the country approached record highs over the winter period.
