Gas Safe registrations 'only covers gas installations'

Gas Safe-registered installers should be careful to remind their clients that registration alone does not signify competence in installing other heating systems, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (Ciphe) has claimed.
According to the organisation, there is a commonly held belief that Gas Safe-registered engineers will be able to advise on heating oil, biomass and other heating systems, a misperception that installers have a responsibility to debunk.
"Gas Safe registration relates to gas and only gas. All other aspects of public safety relating to plumbing and heating engineering are covered by competencies and qualifications that installers should hold to carry out work safely," said Blane Judd, chief executive of Ciphe.
In other recent announcements, the group has also reminded installers of their responsibility to inform client's about the need for carbon monoxide detectors, regardless of whether a home uses a gas, heating oil or solid-fuel heating system.
